This list is nothing more than a simple general guideline for what to expect from a trailer inspection in Pa.

External

  1. Verify ownership, legality and proof of financial responsibility. Ownership and legality shall be proven by a vehicle registration card, certificate of title or manufacturer’s statement of origin.
  2. Check Window Glazing for cracks or broken glass.
  3. Check door operation, including the tailgate.
  4. Check the lamps and lenses.

Internal

  1. Check Flooring to ensure it can support cargo

Beneath the Vehicle

  1. Inspect the tires and wheels for wear or damage
    (2/32 inch tread minimum)
  2. The tire is worn so that tread wear indicators contact road in any two adjacent grooves.
  3. Part of the ply or cord is exposed.
  4. A tire has been repaired with blow-out patch or boot.
  5. There is a bump, bulge or separation.
  6. A tire is marked ‘‘not for highway use,’’ ‘‘for racing purposes only’’ or ‘‘unsafe for highway use,’’ or has any similar designation.
  7. There are other conditions or markings reasonably believed to render tire unsafe for highway use
  8. A tire extends beyond body line, a tire is smaller than the manufacturer’s recommended minimum size or below the manufacturer’s recommended load rating or a tire makes contact with the body or chassis.
  9. Tires on same axle are not the same size or type of construction—bias, belted or radial.
  10. The wheel nuts or bolts are missing or loose or have improper thread engagement.
  11. The stud or bolt holes are worn out of round.
  12. An axle has missing tires or rims.

 

  1. Inspect the vehicle frame
  2. Inspect the braking system
  3. Inspect the air suspension system (if equipped) and reject if the system is leaking or deflated.
